Don't let the execution bury the idea!

In this day and age of high tech this and that, iPods and iPads, and iDon't-know-what-to-do-next, it is becoming increasingly difficult to come up with a good idea. You know, the kind of ideas that sell a product or service and may even lead to the next generation iSomething.

Our technology environment is part of the problem. We have too many distractions. We tend to contemplate more about the execution of said idea rather than the idea itself. Don't let the execution bury the idea! Don't set out to develop an idea just for television, for example, because you may ignore an appropriate venue like any of today's social media.

The best ideas are media and discipline neutral. If they're not or you're concentrating too much on one specific medium, you'll limit yourself. You'll also limit your idea's effectiveness.

Also, keep it simple. If you can't explain the essence of your idea in about twenty seconds, it's too complicated and people won't readily buy into it. And that's what you want them to do.

In bygone days (not that long ago), we'd use a cocktail napkin or at the very least a piece of paper and a pencil, crayon or some writing instrument to convey our precious new idea. Not a bad concept today.

Remember, the computer and software are just tools to enhance the idea, not to compete with, replace or screw it up.

Use your own computer - your brain! Concentrate on the idea; the execution will follow.
